It vividly demonstrates on stage how the French Revolution transformed the lives of the Churlgy family, a typical aristocratic household, over a span of approximately forty years (1787, 1793, and 1825). Strikingly, the authors captured each of these eras through three distinct theatrical genres: comedy, drama, and vaudeville. Scribe masterfully depicts a changing France: the pre-revolutionary period ruled by the Ancien Régime and symbolized by primogeniture; the revolutionary period marked by radical democratization and the introduction of divorce laws; and the post-revolutionary period under the constitutional monarchy of the Restoration.
